Does the Internet Connect or Distract Us?

At Kosciusko Connect, we’re all about making connections. From engaging with our community to delivering fast fiber internet to your home, this has always been our goal – it’s even in our name!
However, constant online access also creates opportunities for distractions. Young children can become entranced by new devices, some teenagers seem addicted to whatever technology is closest, and our friendships and relationships can be easily interrupted by the need to check every notification.
Still, the online world has an irreplaceable positive impact on our life. The effects of COVID-19 probably made you appreciate technology in a new way, as we had to rely on video calls and messages with loved ones to stay connected to them. Online, we found new opportunities for conversations and shared understanding with families who were going through the same thing.
What about now? Does the internet connect us or distract us from our family, friends, and colleagues?
While online access can be a barrier to in-person connection, we believe that it can be used for impactful purposes that make it an important part of our lives. No matter how you use your fast fiber internet (or how you’re looking forward to using it when it’s installed), our goal in connecting Kosciusko County to the internet is to create new opportunities and make your life a little easier.
In this blog, we’ll discuss how to use the internet for online connection while staying in the moment with the people around you.
It starts with you.
If you want to help your whole family develop healthy online habits, it has to start with you. No matter what your daily screen time looks like, it’s worthwhile to ask yourself some questions:
- What apps do I spend the most time on?
- What do I use each device for?
- Do I have a specific purpose in mind when I turn on a device?
- Does technology stop me from having quality face-to-face conversations?
- How can I use the internet to improve the lives of people around me?
Analyzing your own technology habits will help you use your online access to improve the lives of those around you. You’ll be able to set an example for your family and cultivate self-awareness whenever you log on for any purpose.
Focus on the value.
When you start to notice online distractions in your home, try to refocus on how the internet helps you. With the right mindset, video calls with friends create long-lasting connections, and movie nights with streaming TV services become times of bonding.
It’s possible to be online and still connect with those around you, but it takes a group effort. When you focus on the value of the internet’s opportunities, it’s easier to make intentional in-person connections and enjoy your uninterrupted Wi-Fi connection together.
Reach out through your internet use.
If you find the internet becoming a distraction for you, try looking for ways to interact with others through the online activities you already enjoy. Here are a few suggestions from us:
- Invite a friend to collaborate on a music playlist
- Set up a weekly movie night with your kids and take turns choosing what to watch
- Find a remote work-from-home buddy to chat with over your lunch break
- Share your favorite videos and social media posts to brighten someone’s day
- Interact with online communities safely instead of growing isolated
Whatever you use the internet for, find new ways to connect with those you feel distracted from.
We hope our tips are helpful to you! At the end of the day, the internet is a way to connect with each other and share our lives with people we otherwise couldn’t. By reaching out and being intentional about in-person engagement, our lives with high-speed Wi-Fi become even more connected. Learn more about a fiber internet connection here.
